5 Tips to Get Through the Post-Midterm Semester

It’s about that time during the semester again. And you know exactly what I’m talking about.

It’s the “so close, but so far” time. You get right through midterm, and then you realize…oh, you’re only halfway there. 

As a post-midterm student, I’m finding every new day to be a little bit more a struggle. I keep waiting, and waiting for the semester to end, and it’s not helping me one bit. I’m dreading every new day, as I keep hoping that tomorrow when I wake up it will magically be Christmas break. And let me tell you, that’s no way to do it.

So, I’m trying to keep these five things in mind and stay positive, so I can finish the year smooth sailing—without any dread or too much eagerness.

Christmas Break is so close…Thanksgiving Break is even closer…but for some reason, time is at a halt. Day after day, class after class, and you seem like you’re getting nowhere. The weather’s getting colder, you’re bed is getting warmer, and a little post-midterm depression sets in.

But you’ve got to fight this. You can’t give up now. Remember, you’re already halfway there!

1. Wake up every morning and say “I can do this.”

Because you CAN do this! One more day, you can do that much. Start the day with a little positivity; it never fails.

2. Make a countdown!

Thanksgiving Break—well, food—is what is motivating me to get through the day. Make this day out, and you’re one step closer to all the home cooked turkey and stuffing there is!

Whether it be the weekend, thanksgiving break, christmas, the end of the semester…a countdown fills the day with a little more purpose, and a lot more motivation.

3. Get out of your lazy slump and do something.

The day seems agonizing, but when you get back to your dorm and place, make it worthwhile. Instead of going straight to the bed, or watching TV. Make something to eat, and keep your day going. Get the bulk of your homework done. Pick up that mess of laundry and do it. Clean that horrible, messy thing you call a “living area.” Go on a run. Stay active to keep that miserable, lazy persona out of your system, and keep going!

4. Give yourself a little treat, but not too much!

Hey, everyone deserves a little splurge every once in a while. But don’t take advantage of that way of thinking. Make sure that your treat is accompanied by work.

Finish you lab report, with a reward in mind. If I finish this now, I can have fun later. Balance is essential—don’t stress yourself out, but don’t forget about your responsibilities either. Motivate yourself with a little treat. Splurge, but do work!

5. Keep your studying habits.

Don’t be the person that thinks “I aced the first half of this class, so the next half should be easy sailing.” You gotta keep it going! Study as hard as you did on the first exam on the last exam.

And if the class is easier in the second half, then it’s a “win-win.” You may boost your high C to and even higher B! No complaints there. Keep the studying habits, and lose the laziness. In fact, you can learn from past experiences to make your studying stronger and more worthwhile!

With all that being said, 20 days until Thanksgiving Break!
